SHIKKEN

In the 13th century the Mongols conquered Korea, and by 1266 Kublai Khan set his eyes across the sea to Japan. He sent emissaries demanding surrender: "Genghis Khan governed at heaven's commands. All countries belong to our family... Now, under our sage emperor, all under the light of the sun and the moon are his subjects. You, stupid little barbarians. Do you dare to defy us by not submitting?"

Japan rushed to prepare for the invasion. The shikken 執権 of the Hōjō 北条 clan was absolute ruler of the Empire, and began to fortify the coast, and ordered the Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to pray for victory.
